LabCom is composed of four research groups that combine their specific lines of work with strengthening their interdisciplinary collaboration around common or cross-cutting topics and organizing events and scientific publications.

Media Studies Group

Primary Researcher: João Carlos Correia

O grupo de Estudos dos Media dedica-se a pesquisar o papel social dos media na constituição do espaço público privilegiando os conceitos de "cidadania" e de "participação", entendidos de um ponto de vista comunicacional.  Nas áreas de interesses prioritários encontram-se efeitos sociais dos media; opinião pública; ativismo mediático; movimentos sociais; deliberação e participação; media comunitários e de proximidade e regulação e economia dos media.

Journalism Study Group

Primary Researcher: João Canavilhas

The Journalism Studies group is dedicated to researching the relationship between journalism and the technologies used to produce, distribute, and consume information. Among its priority areas of interest are new journalistic narratives, artificial intelligence, mobile journalism, and local journalism. The group is also dedicated to studying the processes of disinformation and science communication.

Strategic Communication Group

Primary Researcher: Gisela Gonçalves

The Strategic Communication group studies the persuasive communication processes of individuals, groups, and organizations in the private, public, or social sectors in pursuit of commercial, social, or political objectives. Crisis and risk communication, health communication, political propaganda and communication, branding and advertising, public and organizational communication, cause communication, and sustainability are its main areas of work.

Culture, Identity, and Memory Group

Primary Researcher: José Ricardo Carvalheiro

The Culture, Identity, and Memory group is dedicated to investigating the links between communication processes and the dynamics of cultural construction and production, considering in this approach both the anthropological meaning (national or local cultures, specific groups, subcultures, and countercultures) and the literary and artistic fields, with particular attention to the role of the media in (re)defining identities, and including perspectives on historical duration and issues related to memory.
